Short answer: take the photo with a GPS camera so the address and coordinates are printed on the image, then send it. In GPS Map Camera that is one tap: the Send button on the thumbnail opens WhatsApp with the photo and a caption containing the address, coordinates, a Google Maps link and the time.
Why the location gets lost
Your phone’s normal camera can save the location inside the photo file (the EXIF data). But WhatsApp removes that hidden data when it compresses images, so the person receiving the photo can’t see where it was taken. Sharing your live location separately works, but it’s a second message and doesn’t prove the photo was taken there.
The reliable way is to put the location on the photo, where compression can’t remove it.
Send a photo with location, step by step
- Open GPS Map Camera and wait for the green “Ready” chip.
- Take the photo. The map, address, coordinates and time are stamped on it.
- Tap Send on the thumbnail that appears for a few seconds after the shot. WhatsApp opens with the photo attached.
- Pick the chat or group and send.
Missed the button? Open the photo in the app’s viewer and tap the WhatsApp button next to Share.
What the caption contains
With Add location to message switched on (it is by default), the caption includes:
- the street address,
- the coordinates in the format you chose (decimal, DMS, UTM…),
- a Google Maps link the receiver can tap to open the exact spot,
- the date and time of the photo.
The caption is written in your app language and carries no advertising or app link. Switch it off in Settings if you only want to send the image.
Photos you already took
If you took the picture with the normal camera and “Save location” was on, open it with Stamp an existing photo. The app reads the stored location and date, saves a stamped copy, and you can send that one.
FAQ
Does WhatsApp remove the location from photos?
WhatsApp strips hidden EXIF data, including the GPS position, when it compresses a photo. A location stamped on the image itself survives, which is why field teams use a GPS camera.
Can I send it to WhatsApp Business?
Yes. GPS Map Camera sends to WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business, whichever is installed.
Can I send a video with the location?
Yes. Videos carry the same stamp and Quick Send works for them too.
